Cochran Firm Hired in Chavis Carter Case

(USGovernment-News.Com, August 18, 2012 ) MEMPHIS, Tenn. - As the controversy surrounding the mysterious shooting death of 21-year-old Chavis Carter continues to build with the release of videos from police car dashboard cameras, the victim’s family announced yesterday that they hired The Cochran Firm to uncover the truth regarding the untimely death of their son.

Chavis Carter, a young African American man, died on the night of Saturday, July 30 after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head. After the Jonesboro, Ark. police pulled over a vehicle reported for driving around suspiciously, Carter was arrested when they discovered he had an outstanding bench warrant in Mississippi. The vehicle contained two other Caucasian young men, which were released soon after Carter was placed in the squad car. Officers found a small bag of Marijuana on his person and what appeared to be a small bag of cocaine under one of the other two men’s seat.

The Jonesboro, Ark., Police Department reported that Carter was in the back of a patrol car with his hands cuffed behind his back and double-locked when officers discovered he'd been shot. Police Chief Michael Yates stated that it was a “bizarre” incident and that the circumstances surrounding Carter’s death “defies logic.”

Benjamin Irwin, the Managing Partner of the Memphis office of the Cochran Firm, said, “His team will begin a relentless search for the truth. We must discover what happened the night Carter died.” Irwin said, “We believe young Chavis's mother and this entire region deserve to know the truth about this incident.”

The NAACP, as well as other human rights organizations, has been following the Carter investigation with much scrutiny. Before being seated in the back of the squad car, it is reported that Carter was frisked not once, but twice. Despite the most basic responsibility of a police officer—to protect and serve—especially someone in police custody, Sargent Lyle Waterworth of the Jonesboro Police department said in an interview, “Any given officer has missed something on a search, be it drugs, knife, razor blades, this instance it happened to be a gun.”

Irwin released in a statement, “The Cochran Firm will focus our investigation not only on the facts of this incident, but also the training and work history of the police officers involved. There are just too many questions unanswered, and the answers to the questions that we have been given thus far defy both logic and reason. The officers involved with this case appear to be either incompetent, or they are not being completely truthful about what happened.”
