Pradaxa Lawsuits Consolidated to Illinois Federal Court

(USGovernment-News.Com, August 11, 2012 ) Tampa, Florida -- Morgan and Morgan is pleased to announce that a panel of federal judges has issued an order consolidating all current and future federally-filed cases involving the blood thinner Pradaxa before the Honorable Judge David R. Herndon of the Southern District of Illinois. In its order, the Joint Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) found that consolidation is proper because each of the cases “share common factual questions arising out of allegations that plaintiffs suffered severe bleeding or other injuries as a result of taking the drug Pradaxa.” Each of the suits against the drug’s manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim, et al., make similar claims, including that the defendants failed to properly warn patients and doctors about the drug’s lack of an antidote and that this irreversibility could result in serious, disabling and fatal consequences.

“I am very pleased with the panel’s ruling on the Pradaxa cases,” said Michael Goetz of Morgan and Morgan. “This litigation is complex and demands a substantial amount of resources. Consolidating the cases will expedite litigation, cut costs and allow these cases to be resolved more consistently.”

Approved in Oct. 2010 to prevent stroke in non-valvular atrial fibrillation patients, Pradaxa was the subject of an FDA safety announcement just 14 months after its introduction into the marketplace. In Dec. 2011, the FDA announced that it had received a number of reports of serious bleeding in Pradaxa users and would be looking to determine whether these reports are occurring more commonly than would be expected. While all anticoagulants pose a bleeding risk, lawsuits filed on behalf of Pradaxa users are alleging that there is no antidote to reverse the drug’s anti-clotting effects, leaving medical professionals without an effective way to treat and stabilize patients who suffered from uncontrolled or excessive bleeding while taking Pradaxa.
