(USGovernment-News.Com, August 09, 2012 ) Founded in 1979, ARISE, of New York exists to address the needs of people of all ages with all types of disabilities, their families, and the community. This non-profit, non-residential, community-based center for independent living strives to help promote the social, educational, economic and individual interests of people with disabilities. ARISE offers a wide range of services to support independent living, these services include: peer counseling, independent living skills training, information and referral, and individual and systems advocacy. The organization also offer various programs beyond the core services.
Listed below are brief descriptions about a few of the services and programs offered through ARISE:
Benefits Advocacy: This program helps individuals apply for and maintain benefits such as: Medicaid, public assistance, HELP, Supplemental Needs Trust, Social Security Benefits (SSI and SSDI), food stamps and Section 8.
Education Advocacy: ARISE’s education assistance helps ensure students with disabilities receive a proper education in the least restricted environment.
Health Care Advocacy: This program focuses on ensuring that people with disabilities understand their health care rights and helps them transition from nursing homes to community living by finding housing options.
Housing Advocacy, Information and Referrals: The housing program helps people with disabilities locate affordable, accessible housing. They also provide referrals to community resources.
