Allegations have surfaced that certain banks are processing their customers’ transactions from highest-to-lowest, regardless of the order in which they were made. This is believed to be causing accounts to hit a negative balance more quickly, allowing banks to collect more profits by increasing the number of overdraft fees they can charge. Allegedly, if the transactions were processed in the order in which they were made, the customer would have had enough funds to cover more of the purchases and incurred fewer overdraft fees. For instance, assume a customer with $35 dollars in their account makes three debits in the following order: $10, $15 and $100. Instead of processing the debits in the order in which they were made, some banks are allegedly processing the largest one first – in this case, the $100 transaction. Had the debits for this consumer gone through in the order in which they were made, the customer would have only incurred one overdraft fee.
