Cardiac stent placement is generally prohibited in patients who arteries are less than 70% blocked, as advances in medicine and technology have allowed for the development of alternative treatment methods. These procedures should not be used a first line of treatment in patients with stable coronary artery disease, as stent placement is no more effective at preventing heart attacks in these patients than other medical treatments. It has been alleged that some doctors may be misleading their patients as to the severity of their artery blockage to convince them to undergo costly and unnecessary stent procedures. In 2010, reports surfaced that a doctor misread his patients’ cath reports, in one instance informing a patient with artery blockage around 10% that his arteries were 90% clogged. It is believed that some doctors and hospitals may be unnecessarily ordering these procedures for their own financial gain. Cardiac stenting procedures can cost up to $15,000 per patient and contribute significantly to hospital and doctor revenue.
Coronary stent placement carries serious risks, including blood clots, heart attack and stroke. In some cases, patients who undergo these procedures need to take expensive blood thinners for a period following their procedure to reduce their risk of post-operative blood clots.
