(USGovernment-News.Com, August 02, 2012 ) Dothan, AL – The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has issued new guidelines for obtaining and renewing disabled parking permits which will go into effect October 1, 2012.
We have all seen people who appear to be perfectly healthy park in handicapped spots in front of the mall or other businesses forcing those who need closer parking to walk a distance. As the population of Florida ages the need for legitimately disabled residents to have access to handicap parking is also growing. To help combat the limited space problem Florida will begin requiring people who have or want the blue permanent disabled parking permit to provide proof of their disability in order to renew or obtain the permit.
Within twelve months of the permit expiring, the permit holder must complete Florida Form HSMV 83039 and have it signed by a certifying authority attesting to a disability and the need for a permit. Once granted, the permit lasts for four years and there is no charge for renewing the blue permit. Permits that are lost or stolen can be replaced by completing the same form to provide disability documentation.
This law does not affect red temporary disability permits nor disabled (wheelchair) license plate holders.
The State of Florida takes the misuse of disabled permits seriously. Obtaining a permit fraudulently can result in criminal penalties. In addition, the permit must have the permit holder’s license number or state identification number written on it, have a current permit sticker affixed and the permit holder must have their matching identification on them when using the parking permit. Florida even has a parking permit misuse hotline to combat fraud. The number to call to report a possible parking permit violation is 850-617-3803.
