(USGovernment-News.Com, July 25, 2012 ) Staying true to its mission, Mississippi Food Network (MFN) strives to relieve poverty-related hunger throughout the Jackson, Mississippi community. The organization distributes donated and purchased food and grocery products to various churches and nonprofit organizations. MFN also offers various Child Feeding Programs that are available to those in need.
Listed below are brief descriptions of the programs offered:
BackPack Program-This program exists to provide food to children in need. These food-filled backpacks are given to children to take home with them. The backpacks are discreetly distributed on the last day before the weekend or before holiday vacation.
Afterschool “At Risk” Snack Program-This program is designed to provide healthy snacks to children in afterschool programs in low-income communities.
Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)-The Summer Food Service Program was started in 2008 and provides hungry children with breakfast and lunch for eight weeks.
Nutrition Education-The goal of this program is to teach people about healthy food choices, healthy snacks and exercise. Nutrition education is offered to children participating in the programs and senior citizens participating in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP.)
