Cochran Firm Reports on Living Well with Diabetes

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 01, 2012 ) Dothan, AL -- True to their name, the primary purpose of Southeastern Diabetes Education Services (SDES) is to educate Alabamian children and their families on how to live with diabetes. In a leisure and recreational setting, SDES brings children and their families together with diabetes-related professions to form a supportive family network. Through the network, the goal of SDES is to provide the opportunity for families and children to socially interact with other children and families living with diabetes while connecting them with out-of-hospital access to diabetes care professionals, comprehensive diabetes management education and general emotional support.

Children and their families are able to participate and receive the services offered by SDES through the following programs:

Camp Seale Harris – Camp Seale Harris is SDES’ residential family education and support program.

Through Camp Seale Harris, individuals can participate in Spring, Summer and Fall Family Camp overnight diabetes education/recreation programs. In addition to offering a variety of recreational activities for children and their families, SDES also provides daily diabetes education sessions taught by health professionals. The program is available to children, up to 17 years old, and their families.

Camp Sugar Falls – Camp Sugar Falls is SDES’ summer day program. Like the Camp Seale Harris program, Camp Sugar Falls also offers a wide range of recreational activities and daily diabetes education sessions. The program is available for children with diabetes who are between the ages of 6 and 15. Depending upon availability, the program also allows children with diabetes to bring a sibling or a friend who is within the same age range. SDES offers the Camp Sugar Falls program in four locations throughout the state of Alabama: Birmingham, Mobile, Tuscaloosa and Dothan.

Community Programs – Through the Community Programs, SDES provide local activities for children with disabilities from birth to 17 years of age and their families. In addition to activities and social interaction with other families, the program also provides diabetes care from a diabetes healthcare professional. This program has grown to include the following Alabama communities: Auburn/Opelika, Birmingham, Florence/The Shoals, Mobile, Montgomery, Dothan and Huntsville.

Family Mentoring – SDES’ Family Mentoring program pairs parents and/or caregivers of newly diagnosed children with another parent of a child with diabetes. The goal of the program is to connect parents of newly diagnosed children with other parents to foster friendships and encourage support.

SDES desires for every child with diabetes to have the opportunity to participate in the programs and services it offers. For families and unable to participate due to monetary reasons, SDES offers several financial aid programs to help defray the cost associated with any of their programs. Diabetes is one of the most common known diseases. It is a disease that causes the body to misuse or to not produce the proper amount of insulin that is required to convert food into the energy the body needs on a daily basis. While many individuals only know the disease as a condition that affects adults, it is becoming more prevalent amongst younger children and teens. The Cochran Firm understands that having diabetes at a young age can be challenging and wants children and their families to know about an organization dedicated to helping them.
