Cochran Firm Reports on the SSAÂ’s New Compassionate Allowances Conditions

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 24, 2012 ) Dothan, AL -- The Social Security Administration has announced fifty-two new medical conditions will be added to the Compassionate Allowances Program. The new medical conditions, effective August of 2012, primarily include neurological disorders, cancers and rare diseases.

The application process for disability benefits can be lengthy; the average time spent waiting for approval can be over 300 days. Unfortunately, many individuals have serious debilitating conditions, families to care for or bills to pay and can’t afford to wait that long to receive benefits. The Cochran Firm understands the challenges these individuals face and want them to know about a program managed by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to help individuals receive benefits sooner.

Introduced in 2008, the goal of the SSA’s Compassionate Allowances program is to identify and fast-track the disability decisions for individuals with the most serious disabilities to ensure they receive benefits within days opposed to months or possibly even years. Through the use of highly developed new information technology, the SSA is able to distinguish diseases or conditions that undoubtedly meet the statutory standards for disability and quickly make benefit decisions. The disabilities included on the list of Compassionate Allowances include certain cancers, brain disorders, rare genetic disorders, immune system conditions, early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and a variety of other disorders that now, with the announcement of the 52 new conditions, equal a total of 165 disorders.

The Compassionate Allowances program has helped the SSA to quickly approve disability benefits for nearly 173,000 applicants since the program began. To learn more about the program or to determine if your condition is included on the list, call 1-800-772-1213 or visit their website at www.socialsecurity.gov/compassionateallowances.
