Many Women Undergo Multiple Surgeries After Receivig Vaginal Mesh Implant

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 29, 2012 ) PHILADELPHIA, PA- LegalView, a leading online legal resource, has reported on the difficulties of vaginal mesh removal and the long term affects of the mesh on women's lives.

Many women who have received vaginal mesh implants have to have several surgeries to correct complications. Since these devices are designed to grow around human tissue, they are very difficult to remove.

It can take a lot of training and experience to correctly diagnosis, manage, and correct these injuries. Unfortunately, there are not many physicians or surgeons who can treat and correct the damage that can be done with a vaginal mesh implant.

In 1998, medical device manufacturers introduced trans vaginal surgical mesh to treat pelvic organ prolapse, or POP, or stress urinary incontinence, or SUI. However, after many women have complained about complications, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has become increasingly concerned about these products.

POP is a condition that occurs most commonly after a woman has had a hysterectomy or multiple childbirths, where the pelvic organs slip out of place and descend, or bulge, into the vagina.
SUI is involuntary loss of urine during physical activity like sneezing, coughing, laughing, or exercising.

The FDA began warning health care professionals about the device in 2008, and wanted surgeons to receive specialized training on how to properly implant these devices. However, in July 2011, the FDA issued a formal warning against the device which spurred hundreds of women to file law suits alleging the devices have hurt them, both physically and emotionally.

In its report, the FDA cited more than one hundred manufacturer complaints. The most commonly reported is mesh erosion, where the mesh erodes into surrounding tissues. Another common complication is mesh shrinkage. Other complications include: pain, infection, bleeding, urinary tract infections, obstruction of the uterus, injuries to the bowel and bladder, injuries to the blood vessels with massive hemorrhaging, injuries to nerves, and many more.

There are several other alternatives to vaginal mesh, so if you are suffering from stress urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse, speak with your physician about alternatives.
