(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 17, 2012 ) New York, NY -- The State of Oklahoma released a disturbing finding concerning its budget: the costs to the state because of addiction is more than the stateÂ’s entire government budget.
The National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors reported that the costs of addiction are $7.2 billion annually for Oklahoma. The state governmentÂ’s budget is approximately one-half billion less than that total. The costs were categorized as direct and indirect costs. Direct costs are classified as spending for doctors, police, prisons and hospital care. Indirect costs are things such as decrease in productivity, goods that arenÂ’t produced and deaths or illness related to addiction.
“While this statistic was specific to Oklahoma, there are probably other states that have the same level of costs for addiction,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “States have to step up their approach to preventing substance abuse and alcoholism. This could be accomplished in a variety of ways, such as increased public awareness of the costs of addiction and, most importantly, a broader community based education program.
