(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 08, 2011 ) Chicago, IL -- Illinois is facing the same problem that many states are; a growing number of uninsured motorists. To combat the growing issued, Illinois has recently enacted tougher penalties for those caught driving without coverage.
The move toward tougher penalties began with a single accident. An Illinois woman hit a car that was parked in the middle of the road with no lights on and was uninsured. The woman was nearly killed, yet all the other driver faced was $1,150 in fines. Starting Jan 1, 2012, those penalties will become much stiffer.
At the beginning beginning of the new year, repeat offenders will face larger fines and possible jail time. There are several other potential remedies for uninsured motorists in the works in Illinois and around the country. With some states estimating that 25% of drivers do not have insurance, it is easy to see why legislatures are taking action.
