A honeycomb structure is made from a core material that resembles a beehive’s honeycomb. It is sandwiched or laminated between thin outer skin sheets. The honeycomb design provides an excellent combination of efficiency and strength, while drastically reducing the component weight. The applications of honeycomb material include use in flooring, enclosures, walls, and decorative shapes. A variety of metals and synthetics are manufactured in honeycomb shapes. Most common materials used include aluminum, aramid fibers, phenolic-impregnated Kraft paper, and polypropylene. Honeycombs can be filled with polyurethane foam. They can also be left without a filler material. Proper selection of filler depends on the required application. Some other possibilities for honeycomb materials are steel, plywood, and stainless steel.
