Aircraft tires withstand heavy loads for short durations. The number of tires required by an aircraft depends on its weight, which must be effectively distributed to each tire. The design of an aircraft tread pattern is critical and must facilitate stability during high crosswind conditions. Tire treads must also channel the water away to prevent hydroplaning and provide a braking effect. The tires are inflated with nitrogen to minimize contraction and expansion from extreme changes in ambient pressure and temperature during flight. The use of an inert gas in tires eliminates the possibility of tire explosion. Aircraft tires operate at high pressures of about 200 pounds per square inch.
