According to the FTC, Oreck allegedly made false and deceptive claims regarding the health benefits of its Halo Vacuum and ProShield Plus air purifier. The following are among the claims which the FTC alleges are false and deceptive: the Oreck Halo vacuum and ProShield Plus air cleaner can prevent or reduce the risk of the flu; the vacuum and air cleaner can prevent or reduce the risk of other illnesses or ailments caused by allergens, bacteria, molds and viruses; the vacuum can eliminate nearly all common germs and allergens found in the home; the vacuumÂ’s UV light is effective against mold, germs, bacteria, dust mites and viruses found in carpets; the air cleaner eliminates nearly all airborne particles from the normal household room. In April 2011, the FTC reached a settlement with Oreck requiring the company to stop making these allegedly false claims until it provides scientific evidence; the company also agreed to pay $750,000 to the FTC.
