In August 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics recalled the ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System after research revealed that more patients than expected experienced pain and other problems which required a revision surgery. While the DePuy Pinnacle Acetabular Cup system was not part of this or any DePuy hip recall, patients implanted with this device have allegedly reported similar Pinnacle hip complaints. Like the recalled ASR hips, one version of the Pinnacle system is made of metal-on-metal components, which can reportedly release small metal particles into the patientÂ’s body as they wear. In some cases, patients with metal-on-metal hip replacements may develop an inflammatory reaction to these metal particles known as metallosis. In addition to hip metal poisoning, other reported DePuy Pinnacle complaints include hip pain, hip replacement loosening and hip implant failure.
