The pool and spa drain cover recall was issued because the covers were improperly rated to handle the flow of water through the cover and could pose an entrapment hazard to swimmers and bathers. The spa and pool drain cover recall affects dozens of models made by the following manufacturers: A & A Manufacturing; AquaStar Pool Products; Color Match Pool Fittings; Custom Molded Products; Hayward Pool Products; Pentair Water Pool and Spa; Rising Dragon USA; and Waterway Plastics. A chairwoman for the CPSC has urged public pools with the affected covers to close until the covers can be replaced, and asked that private pool owners contact manufacturers of their drain covers immediately. Drain covers were required by a 2008 law to help prevent accidents in which swimmers could become trapped underwater with hundreds of pounds of suction force.
