Florida Attorney Serves as Ambassador for Special Needs Program

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 19, 2011 ) Boynton-Beach, Florida - Florida lawyer Adele C. Harris is helping to educate parents to become more effective advocates for their children with autism spectrum disorders. An attorney with The Karp Law Firm in Palm Beach Gardens, Boynton Beach and Port St. Lucie, Florida, Harris has agreed to serve as a Special Needs Ambassador for the Advocacy for All Program.

Advocacy for All is an arm of the drive4rebecca nonprofit which seeks to raise funds for autism research and awareness. As a Special Needs Ambassador, Harris is distributing copies of "The Special Needs Parents Parents Handbook" to public libraries and school libraries in South Florida. The book will be available to parents of special needs children who might otherwise not have access to it. The handbook offers advice and information for parents on dealing with schools and the medical community, finding community resources, maintaining balance and cooperation in the family and more.

Harris' estate planning law practice focuses in part on helping parents lay the legal and financial groundwork to ensure a secure future for their loved one with special needs. Special Needs legal planning often includes the establishment of a Special Needs Trust, a sophisticated legal strategy that can provide for a disabled individual without jeopardizing his/her access to vital government benefits. Leaving a lump sum to someone with special needs is generally to be avoided, since it may render the person ineligible for Medicaid and other public benefits.

Parents' need for information about autism spectrum disorders is especially urgent. A recent study by U.S., Canadian and South Korean researchers found the incidence of autism spectrum disorders to be one in every 38 children. This is significantly higher than the number reported by the Centers for Disease Control, one in every 110 children. Autism spectrum disorders refers to a range of disabilities that may cause significant behavioral and communication difficulties.

Attorney Adele C. Harris is a member of the national attorney network on LawyerCentral.com.
