Topamax Cleft Palates May Require Surgical Treatment, Additional Medical Care

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 26, 2011 ) New York, NY – Women who took Topamax or the generic topiramate during pregnancy and delivered a child with an oral cleft may need to pay for several types of medical care to treat their child’s birth defect. The costs of these Topamax cleft palate treatments can be costly; however, women who elect to take legal action may be able to recover compensation for medical expenses, as well as other damages resulting from their child’s Topamax birth defect. If you bore a child with a Topamax cleft palate or lip after taking the drug during pregnancy, visit http://www.classaction.org/topamax.html and complete the free case evaluation form to find out if you may be able to file a claim to recover financial compensation.

Typically, cleft palates, including those resulting from use of Topamax during pregnancy, will require surgery as the primary treatment method. Surgery for cleft palates is generally performed between the ages of 12 months and 18 months and aims to promote normal speech and language development. As the child ages, additional surgeries may be required. The amount and type of surgeries will depend on the severity of the cleft palate and the general health of the child. Additionally, before the initial surgery for the Topamax cleft palate is performed, the child may need medical care to treat breathing and feeding difficulties, as well as to ready the mouth for surgery.

Because cleft palates can cause non-cosmetic problems, additional treatment may be required. Should the child develop errors in articulation or other speech problems, they may have to undergo speech therapy. In addition, because children with cleft palates may develop a misshapen or small jaw, they may need braces or other care for uneven teeth. Children with oral clefts, including Topamax cleft palates, may also be more susceptible to ear and sinus infections, which can lead to temporary or permanent hearing loss. Some of these children may need tubes surgically inserted into the ears to assist with the functioning of the middle ear. Lastly, if the child needs help dealing with feelings about their birth defect, group therapy or other emotional counseling may be needed.

Children who were born with Topamax cleft palates may not necessarily need all of these treatments, as a plan of care will be based on the severity of the birth defect, its complications and other factors. However, because Topamax has recently been linked to an increased risk of oral birth defects, women who took the drug while pregnant and delivered a child with an oral cleft may be able to recover compensation for any necessary treatments. Visit Class Action.org today to learn more about Topamax cleft palates and to receive a no cost, no obligation review of your claim, which can help determine your eligibility for financial compensation.
