Phase two enrolls more people and is used to determine the effectiveness of the drug against the illness, and phase three determines whether the drug can be used to effectively treat the disease. This final stage also determines whether the drug is more effective than the existing drug.
Before a trial begins, patients undergo a pre-clinical trial screening. In this screening, the trial coordinator determines whether patients meet the requirements of the trial. Some trials require patients who have not undergone any treatment while others require patients that have not been responding to treatment. This is done in order to determine whether or not certain treatments are effective against a particular disease.
