Gun Safe Fire Protection May Not Offer the Right Protection for Your Valuables

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 15, 2010 ) (Spokane, WA) Often times, people consider gun safes a great buy relative to size and investment. The price is good compared to other smaller safes, and gun safes usually offer some level of fire protection. However, when you investigate further, you will discover that you may not be getting what you expect.

The fire protection offered by a gun safe is typically different than the fire rating on a standard fire safe. Many gun safes provide only a 20- or 30-minute fire rating, which means the contents inside are only protected if the fire is extinguished relatively quickly.

“Manufacturers and fire industry professionals strongly recommend at least a one hour or more fire rating in order to have a chance at protecting the contents of the safe during a fire,” said Dye Hawley, Manager of SafeandVaultStore.com.

A gun safe, although offering a good value, may only have a 30-minute fire rating, which may not effectively protect the contents of the safe. Many people do not realize this because the gun safe is promoted as a “fire proof” safe. While some level of fire protection is better than none at all, many people are misled by gun safe marketing materials.

“People often put high-end valuables in a gun safe with only a 20- or 30-minute fire rating,” said Jay Hunt, President of SafeandVaultStore.com. “And we know from 60 years of experience and drilling these types of safes open after a fire that the contents do not survive at all, or are in such a condition that it renders the contents not usable.”

SafeandVaultStore.com offers a variety of educational resources to give safe buyers the knowledge needed to make the right purchase – including valuable information on the fire protection rating of safes and which safe will be best for your needs, including gun safes, wall safes, floor safes and depository safes.

For example, one gun safe that is featured on SafeandVaultStore.com is the AMSEC BF Series Gun Safe, which has a 90-minute fire rating. This safe uses a special fire retardant material called DryLight™, which is injected between the inner and outer walls in semi-liquid form. The DryLight™ completely fills air pockets and offers superior fire protection. In addition, the AMSEC BF Series Gun Safe has greater burglar protection as well with its Underwriters Laboratory RSC Burglar Rating.
