New Bill May Lead to Death Penalty for Heroin Dealers, Drug Rehab Nashville Responds

(USGovernment-News.Com, October 07, 2016 ) Nashville, TN -- As reported by the Huffington Post, Republican congressman Tom Reed proposed a new bill called the Help Ensure Lives Are Protected Act which could make it possible for prosecutors to seek the death penalty or life imprisonment in cases involving drug dealers selling Fentanyl-laced heroin. This drastic measure comes in response to the significant increase in heroin and prescription opioid-related overdose deaths this year. While legislators do recognize the need for action in order to find a solution for the drug abuse epidemic, but many also see that more harsh punishment is not the answer.

For any drug treatment facility in Nashville, this news is concerning. As a provider of addiction treatment in Nashville, Drug Rehab Nashville knows that this proposed bill will be more of a setback than a solution to any problem.

A representative of Drug Rehab Nashville comments,
"When we allow fear and anger to guide our decisions, everyone loses. While the current state of the country when it comes to drug abuse and overdoses is clearly concerning and demands a solution, the answer is not the Help Ensure Lives Are Protected Act- in fact, this act protects no one. It promotes fear and perpetuates the already broken nature of our justice system rather than providing a feasible end to opioid abuse. Policies like these are born of stereotypes, stigmatization, and miseducation and will only lead to more death because of fear and shame."
