PUBLIC MEETING TO PRESENT NUCLEAR POWER PLANT EXERCISE FINDINGS

(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 18, 2009 ) OAKLAND, Calif.— The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region IX today announced that a public meeting would be held September 25, 2009 to present preliminary evaluation findings on the performance of a full-scale exercise at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) in Southern California.

The public meeting takes place two days after the one-day exercise. Exercise participants include the state of California; the counties of Orange and San Diego; the cities of Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano; and the Capistrano Unified School District.

FEMA encourages members of the public and the media to attend this meeting, which starts at 3 p.m. in the Capistrano Unified School District Education Center at 33122 Valle Road in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Representatives from FEMA will chair the meeting and present the preliminary findings.

The exercise is a biennial requirement that allows federal teams to examine the ability of the participating county, state and utility officials to protect the health and safety of the public living near SONGS. FEMA will observe and evaluate governmental responses. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will observe and evaluate the on-site performance of SONGS.

The exercise will require the activation of the emergency systems of the counties of Orange and San Diego; the cities of Dana Point, San Clemente, and San Juan Capistrano; the Capistrano Unified School District and the state of California.

The NRC is the federal agency responsible for evaluating on-site emergency plans and exercises for nuclear power plants. FEMA is responsible for evaluating off-site plans and exercises for states and counties through its Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program.
