Talcum Powder Lawsuit Allegations Backed Up By New Study of Ovarian Cancer in African-American Women, Southern Med Law Reports

(USGovernment-News.Com, June 07, 2016 ) Talcum Powder Information: A new study that looked at talcum powder use and ovarian cancer among African-American women appears to give credence to allegations that have been put forth in hundreds of talcum powder lawsuits currently pending in U.S. courts, Southern Med Law reports. The research, which was published last month in Cancer Epidemiology, found that African-American women who regularly applied talc-based powders to their genitals for feminine hygiene purposes were 40% percent more likely to develop ovarian cancer than their peers who did not. Regular talcum powder users who did not apply the products to their genitals had a 30% increased risk.

In reaching their conclusions, the authors of the study surveyed 584 black women with ovarian cancer and 745 black women without the disease. Almost 63% of those in the cancer group reported using talc-based powders, while only 53% of those in the healthy control group did so. The lead author of the study told Reuters that she had previously been skeptical about a possible link between talcum powder use and ovarian cancer, but now considers use of such products an “avoidable risk for ovarian cancer.”

“This study just adds to the evidence supporting hundreds of talcum powder lawsuit plaintiffs who allegedly developed ovarian cancer due to long-term use of Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder and other talc-based products for feminine hygiene,” said Dr. François Blaudeau, the founder of Southern Med Law. “It should be noted that recent trials have highlighted a Johnson & Johnson memorandum from the 1990s that detailed a company plan to market talcum powder to African-American and Hispanic women in order to boost slowing sales of these products.”

Court documents show that Johnson & Johnson has been named in more than 1,200 talcum powder lawsuits that are now pending in state and federal courts around the country. Women and their families allege that regular, long-term application of talc-based powders to the female genitals introduces particles into the vagina which may eventually make their way to the ovaries. The resulting inflammation has the potential to promote the growth of cancer cells. The lawsuits maintain that Johnson & Johnson has known about this risk for years, but chose to protect sales of Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower, rather than warn women of this danger.

Many of the talcum powder lawsuits filed against Johnson & Johnson have been centralized in Missouri Circuit Court in St. Louis. In February, the jury hearing evidence in the litigation’s first trial awarded $72 million to the family of an ovarian cancer victim who died after using Johnson & Johnson talc products for more than three decades. In April, jurors in a second trial ordered the company to pay $55 million to a South Dakota woman, after determining that her decades-long use of Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powders had also contributed to her ovarian cancer. The verdicts were the first in which talcum powder lawsuit plaintiffs were awarded financial compensation. (Case No. 1422-CC09012-01, Circuit Court, St. Louis City, Missouri.)
