(USGovernment-News.Com, June 05, 2016 ) Miami, FL -- People.com reports that 57 attendees of Tampa's Sunset Music Festival suffered drug related illnesses resulting in the hospitalization of 55 and the death of two concertgoers. 21 year old Katie Bermudez and 22 year Alex Haynes are believed to have died of a drug overdoses, though the substance in question has not yet been identified. A Tampa doctor commented that the combination of heat and party drugs such as MDMA and Molly may have been contributing factors. While Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn expressed concerns that the music festival was promoting an atmosphere for drug abuse, attendees instead blamed the festival's lack of proper drug searching in relation to the tragedy.
Miami is a popular destination for music festivals and concert attendees alike. As the home of Ultra Music Festival, facilities offering addiction treatment in Miami share similar concerns regarding drug abuse at concerts and music festivals. Miami Drug Rehab, as one such facility, agrees that greater measures need to be taken by the Sunset Music Festival to prevent substance abuse during their event.
A representative of Miami Drug Rehab comments: "It is the responsibility of Sunset Music Festival to provide a safe, drug-free atmosphere for their attendees to enjoy the music and entertainment. While we don't agree with mayor Bob Buckhorn that any specific genre of music attracts drug use, there is a clear lapse in responsibility on the part of the festival in controlling drug use during this event. This tragedy could have easily been avoided; if Tampa continues to host this event, we hope that next year's festivities include better security and medical services."
