Purdue Students Suggest Alcohol Sales to Cover Mental Health Service, Cincinnati Drug Rehab Responds

(USGovernment-News.Com, March 18, 2016 ) Cincinnati, OH -- According to Fox19, members of the Purdue University student government are proposing an expansion of the school's alcohol sales during sporting events as a means of offsetting the cost to increase mental health services for students. With a 15 percent increase in students seeking such services, the university would require $682,000 to hire more staff members to meet these needs. An increase in alcohol sales would account for a majority of this cost with a projected $500,000 profit. As it stands, only season ticket holders and VIP guests can purchase alcohol; other fans cannot. The University of Maryland already has a program in place in which alcohol sales at sporting games support the mental health services.
Cincinnati Drug Rehab provides top quality drug and alcohol rehab in Cincinnati to people in need from across the United States. Because of this, Cincinnati Drug Rehab knows that substance abuse and mental health disorders can be closely intermingled. Often undiagnosed or untreated mental health disorders lie at the crux of one's addiction. Though the intent is commendable, Cincinnati Drug Rehab urges Purdue President Mitch Daniels to reconsider increasing alcohol sales as a means of funding mental health services at the university.
A representative of Cincinnati Drug Rehab comments,
"While using the funds from alcohol sales at sporting events to provide a positive service for the university is commendable, perhaps creating a link which would encourage drinking for the sake of mental health is not the best way to do so. People living with alcohol abuse disorders are often struggling with mental health issues themselves; alcohol becomes a crutch which they must learn to let go. There are certainly other ways to use this money to benefit the school, such as campus safety measures and educational material concerning college drinking and alcohol abuse, but we suggest finding other means of funding this noble project. Perhaps redirecting the profit from the actual ticket sales would provide sufficient funding."
