The idea was constructed amid an increase in heroin overdose deaths across the country- statistically about four people die in Massachusetts each day due to overdose. Jessie Gaeta, the chief medical officer of the Boston Health Care for Homeless Program, noted that several countries around the world offer safe injection sites, but states that his room will not allow the use of drugs, only offer medical observation in an effort to reduce the risk of overdose. Staff members of the safe room would also encourage users to seek treatment for addiction.
