Benzodiazepine Overdoses Called "Shadow Epidemic", West Palm Beach Drug Rehab Comments

(USGovernment-News.Com, March 08, 2016 ) West Palm Beach, FL -- According to WPDF News, overdose deaths caused by Benzodiazepines- drugs such as Xanax and Valium- have been silently on the rise for more than a decade. New research into the reported overdose deaths of 2013 revealed that 30 percent were caused by Benzodiazepines, second only to opioid drug overdoses. The researchers for the Centers for Disease Control expected a decline or steady rate, but instead found that between 1999 and 2010 the deaths caused by Benzodiazepines increased over five times from .58 to 3.07 per 100,000 adults.

From 2010 to 2013 the rate plateaued among white adult users, the majority population, but continued to rise for Hispanic and black people. Suspected causes for this increase include more people abusing these types of prescription medication, or negative effects when combined with other drugs or alcohol.

As a leading provider of addiction treatment in West Palm Beach, West Palm Beach Drug Rehab is disturbed by the apparently hidden trend of overdose deaths caused by Benzodiazepines. Because West Palm Beach Drug Rehab deals with all types of substance abuse disorders, understanding the trends can greatly aid in efforts to bring relief to those in need.

A representative of West Palm Beach Drug Rehab comments:

"Though our focus on the big drugs like heroin, cocaine, and meth is very important to eradicating the substance abuse epidemic affecting all parts of the U.S., we cannot afford to allow other, less known illicit substances to go unchecked. We have to address addiction as a whole, not simply in the largest pieces. Lives are lost when we ignore problems like Benzodiazepines in favor of other threats. As a community, we must remain aware and educated regarding the things directly and indirectly affecting us all, including those things we would sometimes prefer to ignore, like addiction."
