Heroin Epidemic Causing Rise is Hep C Cases, Cincinnati Drug Rehab Responds

(USGovernment-News.Com, March 07, 2016 ) Cincinnati, OH -- According to Cincinnati.com, public health officials throughout Hamilton County, Ohio and Northern Kentucky are reporting a massive increase in new Hepatitis C cases in 2015- 1,000 were reported, raising the region's record to nearly 4,000 people infected by the potentially debilitating and deadly disease. The rapid spread of Hepatitis C has been directly attributed to the rampant use of heroin throughout the area, and across the country.

These new findings show a 43 percent increase between 2014 and 2015, leaving some public health officials to fear for an increase of another deadly, blood-born disease, HIV. Only 25 percent of Hepatitis C sufferers will recover, with 75 percent developing chronic Hepatitis C, which can destroy the liver and damage other internal organs.

Pushes by public health authorities to develop and enact harm reduction techniques through law medical centers, facilities offering heroin rehab in Cincinnati and throughout the region, and public education can help combat this rise in Hepatitis C cases. Needle exchange programs are especially helpful in preventing infections through shared needles.

As a facility providing heroin rehab in Cincinnati, Drug Rehab Cincinnati is both alarmed and concerned about the recent reporting of the Hepatitis C spike. While their primary cause is to bring relief to those struggling with substance abuse, they understand that their work goes beyond that; combating substance abuse subsequently combats diseases commonly spread through needle sharing, such as Hepatitis C and HIV.

A representative of Drug Rehab Cincinnati comments,

"It's incidents like this one that force us to recognize that addiction recovery is a public health issue. It also emphasizes the impact of substance abuse on the community, rather than just the individual as some would have us believe. Safeguarding our populations who unfortunately live with substance abuse disorders until they are ready and able to seek recovery and sobriety needs to be a part of all public health and safety plans across the nation. Hepatitis C may not seem as dangerous as HIV, but it claims more lives each year- at least partially due to that very same misconception. Needle exchanges, supervised injection rooms, and public educations can prevent Hepatitis C outbreaks from becoming a trend across the country."
