Philadelphia Addiction Treatment Implant Study to Be Reviewed by FDA Feb. 2016

(USGovernment-News.Com, January 26, 2016 ) Philadelphia, PA -- A new method of addiction treatment debuted in Philadelphia, and addiction specialists are prompting the FDA to reevaluate administering implants to prevent cravings for addictive drugs. The injections would last for six months, and serve as the administration point of daily medication for those in recovery- eliminating the chances of abuse of medication, and ensure the proper dose is administered. Implants consist of four tiny rods inserted just beneath the skin in the arm.

Initially the FDA rejected the implants based on a lack of information concerning the number of rods required to function, and removal of the prongs and injection of new ones. Drug Rehab Philadelphia applauds the development of the implants and attests addiction medicine is taking steps in the right direction. An associate from the drug and alcohol rehab in Philadelphia comments,

"This is an exciting perspective for the addiction treatment community, yet we must be cautious new techniques will not simply be band-aids and quick fixes. Although medications meant to taper those with substance use disorders are instrumental in successful treatment, when administered properly, the danger is introducing implants which may have unpredicted adverse effects. Extensive tests should be conducted before approval to ensure implants will not cause further complications. We eagerly await the approval of injections once patient safety is assured."
