Miami Receives $100,000 Grant for DUI Reinforcement, Miami Drug Rehab Responds

(USGovernment-News.Com, February 02, 2016 ) Miami, FL -- The Miami New Times reports that new funding for the Miami Beach Police Department will restore efforts to prevent drunk driving in Miami. A reorganization of patrol zones in 2011 prioritized other crimes over drunk driving arrests, which lead to a decrease in DUI arrests despite Miami Beach ranking sixth in the nation for alcohol-related driving accidents. The Florida Department of Transportation allotted the increased funding in efforts to reverse the trend. Increased sobriety checkpoints will be manned by 15 patrol officers, one lieutenant or two sergeants, as well as one detention officer and one public safety specialist.

Miami Drug Rehab, which provides alcohol rehab in Miami among other services, commends the Miami Beach Police Department for their efforts to reduce alcohol-related accidents in the community. With Miami's reputation as a party destination, Miami Drug Rehab understands the need for increased police presence in order to maintain the safety of all drivers. However, Miami Drug Rehab urges the community to understand the solution to our drunk driving statistics lies in the prevention, not reactive police policies.

A representative of Miami Drug Rehab comments,

"While we are glad to know that the Miami Beach Police Department is focusing on reducing the drunk driving rates within the city, increased arrests are not a solution to the problem. The threat of legal problems may deter some, but we are in need of preventive measures, not reactive; we need an increase in sober driving programs and incentives for designated driving. Additionally, ending the stigmas associated with addiction so that people with alcohol abuse disorders can seek help without facing shame and rejection."
