Study Suggests Brain Injury Increases Risk of Epilepsy

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 25, 2009 ) New York, NY - Lawyer Central wishes to inform brain injury victims that a new study performed by a Danish research team has found that traumatic brain injury puts people at a high risk for epilepsy.

The research team, led by Jakob Christensen at the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, found that the odds of epilepsy more than doubled in mild brain injury patients and was seven times more likely in patients who suffered a severe brain injury. This risk remained for over a decade after the initial injury. The medical researchers analyzed data taken from a national a national registry on traumatic brain injury and epilepsy of 1.6 million young people born in Denmark between 1977 and 2002. Epilepsy causes seizures that can be controlled by drugs in most patients, but it is incurable.
