NaturaLyte and Granuflo, manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care, was the subject of a March 2012 Class 1 recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recall was announced after a leaked internal memo revealed that Fresenius Medical Care physicians were warned of the dangers of these drugs. Granuflo and Naturalyte have been linked to an increased risk of cardiopulmonary as well as reduced potassium levels, dangerous drops in blood pressure and death.
Shortly after the recall, the FDA issued a Safety Communication to healthcare professionals regarding the risks of treating dialysis patients with dialysate concentrates containing acetate, acetic acid, or citrate similar to those found in NaturaLyte and Granuflo.
