Birmingham Shelters Open for Stranded Drivers as Winter Storm Hits Deep South, Reports Cory Watson Crowder & DeGaris

(USGovernment-News.Com, January 29, 2014 ) BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama drivers are bracing for impact as winter storm Leon makes its way through the Deep South after a seven-vehicle crash on an iced-over bridge killed two and injured five in Wetumpka Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Birmingham law firm Cory Watson Crowder & DeGaris urge drivers to be cautious while traveling as Leon passes through the state. According to information from weather.com, numerous drivers were stranded on Birmingham’s Interstate 20 and Alabama Emergency Management Director Art Faulkner warned of possible wide spread power outages.

“Winter storm Leon is bringing a long swath of freezing rain, sleet and snow from southeast Texas to the Gulf Coast,” said weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce. “No matter what type of precipitation falls in any given location, travel conditions are likely to be dangerous into Wednesday.”

To aid travelers who may become stranded on icy roads by Leon’s blinding conditions, numerous warming stations have opened up in the metro area. Those shelters include locations in:

• Birmingham – Boutwell Auditorium, 1930 Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd.; The Church at Brook Hills, Brook Highland Pkwy. and Ala. 119 (Open for shelter only. No food or cots, as noted by a church official)

• Hoover – Hoover Rec. Center, 600 Municipal Ln.; Hoover City Hall, 100 Municipal Ln.; Spain Park High School, 4700 Jaguar Dr.

• Pelham – Pelham Civic Center

• Trussville – First Baptist Church of Trussville, 128 Chalkville Rd.

• Houston County – Westgate Rec Center, 501 Recreation Rd., Dothan

• Cherokee County – Cherokee Health and Rehab, 833, Cedar Bluff Rd., Centre

• Pike County – Troy Parks and Recreation, 601 Enzor Rd., Troy

Weather.com reports indicate dozens of school and business closures as Alabama has declared a state of civil emergency. The Alabama Department of Public Safety has announced road closures at the Alabama River Parkway toll bridge and the river bridge on U.S. Highway 31.

If travel is not necessary, officials have urged drivers to stay off the roads until Leon has passed.
