Freedom Industries Responds to Disclosure Order Revealing Second Chemical in WV Chemical Spill Reports The Bell Law Firm

(USGovernment-News.Com, January 24, 2014 ) CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Bell Law Firm, a Charleston-based personal injury firm that is assisting locals with legal claims related to the WV chemical spill, reports that Freedom Industries responded Wednesday, by letter, to a disclosure order sent by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP).

In the response, signed by Freedom Industries President Gary Southern, it was revealed that the Crude MCHM that leaked into the Elk River on Jan. 9 was a mixture that also included 7.3% “PPH”, or DOWANOL™ DiPPH Glycol Ether. According to a report by John Schwartz in Wednesday’s The New York Times, the presence of PPH was first disclosed to H. Michael Dorsey, director of homeland security and emergency response for the WVDEP, on Tuesday, prior to a meeting the two were to attend with state agencies. The meeting took place 12 days after the initial incident.

According to Schwart’s report, Assistant Professor Andrew J. Whelton from the University of South Alabama’s environmental engineering department visited the area to test the drinking water. Whelton suggested that the procedure for flushing plumbing systems could expose residents to the chemical mixture, if precautions are not taken. Whelton has published an alternate flushing procedure online.

As with Crude MCHM, little is known of the toxic effects of PPH.

The Bell Law Firm is investigating claims from any local residents and business owners who think they may have been affected by the WV chemical spill and Elk River water contamination.
