(USGovernment-News.Com, January 17, 2014 ) CHARLESTON, W.V.—The Bell Law Firm, a Charleston-area personal injury firm, warns pregnant women in the local area to avoid drinking tap water, despite West Virginia American Water Company’s announcement that the water is safe. The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released a water advisory for pregnant women, as well as a document containing answers to frequently asked questions.
In a recommendation the CDC notes was made, “out of an abundance of caution,” pregnant women in the area affected by the chemical spill in the Elk River are advised to drink only bottled water, regardless of whether the do-not-use ban was lifted in their zone. Although trace levels of MCHM have been reduced to less than 1 part per million, research regarding the pollutant’s effects on unborn fetuses is scant, prompting the recommendation.
The Bell Law Firm is currently investigating the health effects of crude MCHM, and has already filed class action complaints on behalf of individuals and local businesses affected by the chemical spill that originated at Freedom Industries last Thursday. Experts have been hired by the firm, and motions have been filed with the Circuit Court of Kanawha County, West Virginia, to preserve evidence and get access for inspection only.
