Filling the Gap- Cochran Firm Disability Lawyers Reports on Tender Mercies

(USGovernment-News.Com, December 17, 2013 ) Dothan, Al – Being homeless and alone on the streets can be difficult enough, but when a mental illness is thrown into the mix the results can be scary and even fatal. Often these people are misunderstood and can become victims of heartless crime. In 1985 Tender Mercies, Inc. reached out to help this group of people by providing shelter, care, counsel and guidance. People who had been splitting their time on the street with drifting in and out of psychiatric hospitals were provided a place to stay; forever changing their lives.

Tender Mercies operates in Cincinnati, Ohio. They can provide transitional housing for homeless mentally or emotionally ill individuals then work to provide permanent housing. In 2011 they achieved a 100% goal of providing permanent housing for all of their transitional housing residents. In addition the organization provides over 130 permanent supportive housing units where residents can increase their skill levels and incomes and achieve stability in their lives while gaining more influence over decisions affecting them. Residents are allowed to stay in the permanent housing as long as support is needed to achieve these goals. Some residents have stayed for over a decade in the permanent housing. In addition to operating its own units, Tender Mercies provides housing through rental assistance programs.

In addition to housing, the organization helps to lift each person out of the squalor and disease associated with homelessness by connecting people with health and social services necessary for each situation. During their stay with Tender Mercies, assistance is provided to teach hygiene, personal care and skills needed for daily life.

Tender Mercies relies heavily on volunteers. Last year 1,464 people contributed over 34,000 volunteer hours.

Referrals to Tender Mercies may be made by calling 513-639-7042. The person being referred must be homeless and have a history of mental illness. After successful completion of the application process the referral will be assisted with housing and other support as needed.
