Five Connecticut Nursing Homes Fined for Substandard Care Reports Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers

(USGovernment-News.Com, December 10, 2013 ) Hartford, CT – Five Connecticut nursing homes have been fined by the Department of Public Health due to inadequate staffing and injuries incurred by patients. Sheriden Woods Health Care Center of Bristol, Aurora Senior Living and Cassena Center of Norwalk, Glendale Center of Naugatuck, and Gardner Heights Health Care of Shelton were all fined.

Sheridan Woods Health Care was fined $1,580 when records showed a resident with a venous ulcer on a toe did not receive follow-up care in September. In Norwalk, Aurora Senior Living was fined $1,280 when a resident who needed assistance to use the restroom was told by a nurse’s aide to “do it on” him or herself. It was determined that two aides had taken their break together resulting in adequate staffing.

Other incidents included a resident who sustained a head laceration after partially falling out of a mechanical lift while being transferred to a wheelchair. The resident received six staples to close the cut. A resident at Gardner Heights sustained a cut on the leg which later required 18 stitches. Finally, a resident in Norwalk broke a shinbone when a nurse’s aide failed to wait for help when transferring the patient from a wheelchair to a bed.

Jeanne Moore, a Glendale Center spokesperson told The Courant “We provided additional staff education and training on the topic of lifts and transfers” following the fine they received.
