As the busiest online shopping day of the year, consumers are at an increased risk of losing their money, receiving counterfeit merchandise, and becoming victims of credit card fraud and stolen identities.
“Like all technology, online shopping offers benefits and risks. Online shopping offers convenience and information for comparison shopping, but consumers should do their homework before sharing credit card information online.” U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade said in a statement to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The National Retail Federations estimates that online shopping sales will increase by nearly 15 percent in 2013. Consumers should limit the amount of personal information they give out, shopping with only one card can limit how much of your information is shared.
Furthermore, shoppers should only purchase merchandise from reputable sellers, avoid clicking on pop-ups, and always use a secure checkout. Before you enter your credit card information make sure the website address starts with “https.”
In 2012 there was one new identity theft victim every three seconds. In total more than 12 million people had their identities stolen and more than $21 billion was lost.
Although the majority of scams on Cyber Monday are internet-based, consumers should also watch for telephone and robo-calling scams which came in as the second most common type of scam.
