Manufactured in Texas by USPLabs, OxyElite Pro is classified as a theromgenic fat burner, touted as a diet pill used to shed fat while increasing muscle mass in various advertisements.
On September 13, 2013, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) became aware of seven Hawaiian residents who fell ill with non-viral hepatitis and acute liver failure after consumption of OxyElite Pro products. The FDA then informed USPLabs that OxyElite Pro and another dietary supplement, VERSA-1, were considered “adulterated” products because of an unregulated new ingredient, aegeline. Failure to destroy or recall the products would lead to enforcement actions, the FDA warned USPLabs.
By the end of October, 2013 there were 43 cases of OxyElite Pro-linked liver failure or non-viral hepatitis cases in Hawaii, and 56 in total. The investigation into the exact cause of the illnesses continues, and USPLabs was ordered to destroy the remaining supply of OxyElite Pro—an amount totaling $22 million retail.
Symptoms of acute liver failure and non-viral hepatitis include: jaundice, or skin yellowing, pain in the upper right area of the abdomen, nausea, vomiting and disorientation.
