Savannah SeniorÂ’s Elder Abuse Story Just One of Hundreds Notes The Eichholz Law Firm

(USGovernment-News.Com, November 19, 2013 ) Savannah, GA – When Eliot Karasick hired Amy Lee as his housekeeper in 2008, he treated her like an adopted child only to later find out she had defrauded him out of more than $250,000. Karasick’s story of elder abuse and financial fraud is just one hundreds that are reported each year while many more are left unreported.

Karasick first hired Lee to help him deal with his wife’s aging issues and home maintenance. As his dependence on her increased he was drawn in by her tales of woe and hard times. Eventually Karasick assisted Lee in buying a new car which included a $10,000 gift to cut costs and loaned her the money to buy a new house with an agreement that she would pay rent. When Karasick entrusted Lee with his wallet while he went in for hip replacement, she treated herself to a three-day shopping spree and cashed in two $300 checks she wrote to herself.

Lee reached out to an attorney to take legal action, but was rebuffed. After getting in touch with Detective Raymond Woodberry and working with the Savannah-Chatham police department, an 11-count indictment led Lee to admit her actions.

A large portion of Karsick’s lost assets were recovered and Lee was barred from having any contact with Karasick or his family members.

A recent investigation into nursing home financial fraud by the USA Today found that since 2010 more than 100 nursing home employees have been prosecuted for nursing home trust fund embezzlement. About 30% of those prosecuted had stolen tens of thousands of dollars and 10 individuals were accused of stealing more than $100,000 from nursing home residents.
