Audit finds that 35% of School Buses in Tennessee were Inspected Late, Notes Greg Coleman Law

(USGovernment-News.Com, November 15, 2013 ) Knoxville, TN – A recent audit by the Tennessee comptroller found that more than one-third of school buses across Tennessee missed their state-mandated annual inspection deadline. The audit noted that the school buses were inspected between one and 345 days late which means that more than 3,500 school buses went without being inspected for more than a year.

The report conducted an audit of operations from June 2010 through April 2013 and also noted that 9 percent of child-care vehicles missed inspections as well, some were as long as 158 days late.

Similarly to how commercial vehicles are expected, school buses are inspected to ensure that they are safe and clearly marked for the road. Some items commonly checked include:

• Braking System
• Fuel System
• Lighting
• Mirrors
• Paint and Markings
• Emergency Exits

When a bus does not pass inspection it will often be placed out of service until repairs are made. Neglecting to inspect a bus could lead to a number of problems including mechanical failure, bus accidents, and hazardous conditions for riders.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, each year, 24 schoolchildren die as a result of a school bus accident.
