Tennessee Highway Patrol Warning Drivers to Watch for Deer Reports Greg Coleman Law

(USGovernment-News.Com, October 10, 2013 ) Knoxville, TN – The Tennessee Highway Patrol has begun to warn drivers to watch for deer due to the fact that in October deer-related crashes tend to increase.

It is estimated that in 2012 there were more than 5,900 deer-related accidents throughout Tennessee. In the past decade the amount of deer-related crashes in Knox County specifically have more than doubled. The majority of deer crashes caused property damage however three of them in 2012 were fatal.

Motorcyclists are more likely to be involved in fatal collisions involving deer.

Deer-related accidents between the months of October and December made up for more than 48% of all deer-related incidents in 2012.

Drivers should be warned that the majority of these types of accidents happen on interstates primarily during sunrise and sunset when deer are most active.

If you are driving during dawn or dusk be cautious particularly when driving near wooded areas. If you see one deer cross the road expect that more may follow. If you see a deer, slow down until you pass that point. Although it is best to try to avoid hitting the deer it should be done safely such as slowing down and moving over to another open lane.

However, if you collide with a deer do not approach the animal and report the collision right away.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a car collision caused by a careless driver, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical expenses, lost wages, and more.
