The collision occurred when the 28-year-old mother failed to yield at the railroad crossing, which resulted in the death of both her six and nine year old girls.
Their mother was flown to a nearby Tulsa hospital where she is in stable condition after suffering from a leg and internal injuries. The engineer and conductor of the train did not sustain any type of injuries.
While all occupants of the SUV were wearing seatbelts, the sheer sizes of a train created enough force to fatally injure both children and severely injure their mother.
According to the Federal Railroad Administration Office of Safety Analysis there have been 92 train accidents in Oklahoma from January to July, 2013. These accidents accounted for 13 fatalities and 43 nonfatal conditions. Of these train collisions, 13 occurred in Tulsa causing one fatality and four nonfatal conditions.
Unfortunately, train collisions occur more often than we might expect and are typically caused by situations such as this where the driver of a passenger vehicle fails to locate the position of a train, thus resulting in a fatal accident.
