(USGovernment-News.Com, October 02, 2013 ) SACRAMENTO, CA – An underground copper wire theft is the likely culprit of an explosion on University of California’s Berkeley campus the evening of Monday, September 30, in an event that sent one person to the hospital and injured three others.
Dan Mogulof, a spokesman for the university, stated that the explosion took place near California Hall in an underground electrical vault which had been the subject of a copper wire theft the prior week. It is likely the theft caused more damage than was initially assessed and that the explosion resulted from an attempt to return power to campus.
One person was sent to the hospital from their injuries, and three more received minor burns but were not transferred to the hospital for treatment. In addition, approximately 20 people were stuck in elevators and rescued by firefighters and as a result students and faculty were evacuated without any word on when classes would resume.
