(USGovernment-News.Com, September 25, 2013 ) Broward County, FL – On Monday afternoon a 35-year-old Tequesta man was critically injured while trying to save a stray cat on the Florida Turnpike.
According to reports Michael James Schneider was traveling northbound on the Ronald Reagan Turnpike in Pompano Beach near the Sawgrass Expressway. Schneider saw a stray cat on the road and pulled his 2003 Toyota Tundra over to try to help the animal. It is believed that Schneider went into the center lane of the busy roadway and was hit by Mary Jane S. Alston, 75, who was unable to stop her vehicle in time.
Alston’s Honda struck Schneider, his pick-up truck, and then a guardrail. Upon hitting the guardrail Schneider who was on the hood of Alston’s vehicle was ejected onto grassland nearby. Both Schneider and Alston were transported to a local area hospital.
Around 6p.m. Mary Jane S. Alston passed away from her injuries and Schneider is still listed in critical condition. The crash is still under investigation.
There were more than 4,800 car crashes on the Florida turnpike in 2012 and according to the Department of Transportation 10 fatal collisions were caused by a driver swerving to avoid hitting an object.
