Detroit Scholarship Fair: Local Groups Helping Students Afford Higher Education Costs

BDYM Better Detroit Youth Movement Event Overview

(USGovernment-News.Com, September 23, 2013 ) DETROIT – The cost of college keeps rising without wages keeping pace. According to the CollegeBoard Advocacy & Policy Center website, the “average published tuition and fees at public four-year colleges and universities increased by 31% beyond the rate of inflation over the five years from 2002-03 to 2007-08, and by another 27% between 2007-08 and 2012-13.” Most parents are having trouble, and many parents and high schools students cannot afford these higher educational costs.

Scholarships are a great way to reduce those costs, if not eliminate them altogether. On September 24, non-profit organizations the Better Detroit Youth Movement (BDYM) and The Infinite Scholars Program are teaming together to host a Scholarship and Resource Fair at Cobo Hall in the Ambassador Room. There is no cost for this event, and it will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"We're proud to bring this fair to Detroit because we want to celebrate the hard work of our high schools students. This is a perfect opportunity to help them engage recruiters from across the country so they can achieve the bright futures they deserve," says BDYM co-director Rae Glover. She adds, "I also want to make sure students across Southeastern Michigan take advantage of the great opportunities this fair offers them."

Admissions representatives from many different schools will attend the event. Plus, other scholarship granting agencies are likely to be at the event.

The Scholarship Fair event began in 2009.

BDYM co-director Harlan “Jay” Bivens shared, “Many people think that they are too young to get scholarships, but we’ve seen people in the 9th or 10th grade get scholarships—on the spot!”

To increase chances of success at the event, the sponsoring groups suggest each attending student bring the following things with them:

• Copy of your SAT/ACT scores

• Multiple Copies of your Transcript

• 2 Letters of Recommendation

• Typed Resume

• Completed Essay answering "Why I want to go to college"
