(USGovernment-News.Com, September 19, 2013 ) GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A Charlotte police officer has been charged with voluntary manslaughter in the death of 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell, who was unarmed and looking for help after a car wreck approximately 15 miles outside of Charlotte.
The officer who shot Ferrell was Randall Kerrick, a former animal control officer turned police recruit in 2011. When Ferrell crashed his vehicle in the woods in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 14, he began furiously pounding on the door of a nearby home, alarming the inhabitants and prompting them to call the police. When Ferrell ran toward the officers who arrived on scene they tased him, and Kerrick fired his weapon 12 times, killing Ferrell. His car was found later at the scene.
Ferrell’s family is heartbroken over the loss of their loved one, and Kerrick was scheduled for arraignment Tuesday, September 17. The attorney representing Ferrell’s family, Chris Chestnut, stated, “Clearly this is someone who did not have the necessary intelligence, discernment or compassion to walk the streets of Charlotte with a handgun, let alone a badge.”
