DigitalOlympus.com Comments on GoogleÂ’s Decision to Offer New Concessions to Avoid Fine in Antitrust Case

(USGovernment-News.Com, September 18, 2013 ) Albany, GA -- On September 11, news and technology blog Digital Olympus.com commented on a Reuters news article regarding Google’s decision to offer further concessions in an attempt to end a three-year investigation, into complaints that the company was blocking its main competitors in web search results, and avoid a potential $ 5 billion fine.

According to the Reuters news piece, the European Commission –which is the main institution of the European Union (EU) regarding antitrust cases– announced it had received a proposal from Google to improve its previous “insufficient” concessions, offered only a couple of months ago.

Jonathan Todd, a European Commission spokesperson, stated that they were currently assessing Google’s new proposal; and while he did not give further details, nor specify if Google’s competitors would be given the possibility to evaluate the new concessions, it is probable that both customers and rivals will be consulted in a full market test.

“Since Google failed to make an adequate offer the first time around, both rivals and the European Commission are expecting things to be different now,” said DigitalOlymus.com lead researcher Joss Cole. “We’d advise Google the same thing we would advise any other company: to employ an impartial firm specialized in due diligence investigations.

DigitalOlympus.com team of researchers pointed out that the best option for Google to bring an end to its EU antitrust case would be for the company to strengthen its Business Intelligence unit with a third-party Business Intelligence team that could provide a fresh perspective into the whole situation.

The Reuters concluded by stating that, “The EU executive is also concerned the company may have put restrictions on advertisers and advertising to prevent them from moving their online campaigns to competing search engines.”
