(USGovernment-News.Com, September 17, 2013 ) Miami, Florida- In the wake of a massive traumatic brain injury settlement by the National Football League, Miami injury attorney John H. (Jack) Hickey seeks to remind Floridians about the dangers of seemingly mild concussions.
The $765 million settlement addressed more than 4,500 lawsuits filed against the NFL, alleging that the league’s negligence led to many athletes’ brain injuries. Thousands of players suffered concussions over the course of their careers, eventually leading to severe side effects. These injuries were initially diagnosed as mild, and it was not until many years after their occurrence that players began suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia, depression and death. Many suspect that brain injury-related depression affected six NFL athletes who committed suicide since 2011. Affected individuals and families can receive up to $5 million depending on the severity of their injuries or the economic effects of the player’s death.
Some of the most serious personal injuries involve brain damage. However, because brain injuries are not always visible or apparent, they can go untreated for months or years after they occur. Their potential effects include vision loss, personality changes, and loss of muscle control, paralysis, mental illness and death.
Attorney Hickey emphasizes the importance of seeking medical attention if a person suffers any kind of a head injury.
“Mild brain injuries from concussions can be just as serious as severe brain trauma if left untreated,” Hickey said. “A concussion, whether caused by a sports injury or a car accident, leaves your brain in a fragile, vulnerable state. Subsequent injuries cause greater and greater harm. We are glad to see the NFL offering some compensation for the harm its players suffered, and we hope it inspires the league to reevaluate its safety standards.”
